KLON Is Now KKJZ
Dial Position, Programming Remain the Same
LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 9, 2002 — KLON-FM has changed its call sign to KKJZ-FM, effective today. The station's position on the FM dial, 88.1, and its programming are unchanged.
"We wanted call letters that accurately reflect the best jazz and blues radio programming in the country," KKJZ-FM General Manager Judy Jankowski said. "KKJZ remains joyfully committed to its mission of preserving and sharing the truly American art forms of jazz and blues."
Jankowski made the announcement and unveiled the new KKJZ-FM station logo during a news conference at the Hollywood Bowl Rooftop Grill prior to Wednesday's Tony Bennett concert. The radio station is the title sponsor of the Jazz at the Bowl concert series.
Based on the campus of California State University, Long Beach, KKJZ has been on the air since 1981 as a jazz station. KKJZ's unique programs offer the full spectrum of jazz music, from bop to cool, from Latin to straight-ahead, from swing to big band, and most everything in between.
The station also broadcasts popular blues programs on Saturdays and Sundays. KKJZ is a public radio station funded by contributions from listener-members and other donors.
"While our call letters have changed, we are unwavering in our goal of bringing a wider audience and respect to jazz and blues through our programming, promotions and events," Jankowski said.
KKJZ is also broadcast on 89.1, KUOR, Redlands, KECG, El Cerrito and worldwide on the Internet at www.kkjz.org. Programming also is distributed via satellite to cable stations and dish owners.
