JazzWeek Hosts Two Sessions at IAJE
How to Get Airplay and JPL Gathering Topics of Meetings
NEW YORK, Jan. 24, 2004 — Hundreds of International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) conference attendees got tips from industry experts on getting radio airplay as they packed a panel session Jan. 24 hosted by JazzWeek titled "What Does It Take To Get Played On The Radio?" Those at the session included broadcasters, promoters, and musicians.

JazzWeek Editor Ed Trefzger moderated the panel, which included guitarist Mark Elf; Neal Sapper, president of New World N' Jazz Promotions; Chuy Varela, KCSM, San Mateo, Calif.; Gary Walker, WBGO, Newark, N.J.; and Linda Yohn, WEMU, Ypsilanti, Mich.
Sapper began the session by explaining all of the steps involved in promoting CDs to radio, while Elf, who has taken seven of his albums to No. 1 on jazz radio, discussed the obstacles independent artists face when promoting their own recordings.
Yohn provided tips to musicians on how to prepare their CDs for ease of review and play on the radio, while Walker and Varela added their own recommendations, and discussed the artistic side of determining what CDs will make it on their stations.

An audio recording of the session is available for purchase from IAJE.
Members of the Jazz Programmers Mailing List (JPL) met for the fourth consecutive year at IAJE on Jan. 23. Traveling the furthest distance among list members to attend was Juan Carlos Valencia of UN Radio, in Bogota, Colombia. JPL members were also treated to a tour of JazzWeek chart reporter Sirius Satellite Radio, thanks to Sirius' Jazz Division Format Manager Matt Abramovitz.
Long Beach, Calif., will host the 2005 conference. JazzWeek is planning to propose additional radio sessions for 2005. Please send your suggestions for 2005 IAJE panel sessions to info@jazzweek.com. JazzWeek will consider that input in our prepartion of proposals that will be submitted to IAJE. ![]()
