[JPL] Art Davis recordings

Yes, different. Richard is a Madison, WI based bassist. Both have
unbelievable technique (and musicianship of course) in totally different
ways. A quick technique note: Art gave a great masterclass at the 2002 IAJE
in LA (which I attended) in which he talked about his career (long,
wonderful, many incredible gigs, accomplished "legit" player who sued the NY
Phil - forgive me if I got that last part wrong) and about his technique.
Double bassists typically use three fingers on their left hand, pointer,
middle and pinky. The ring finger is a support for the pinky. The reasons
for this have to do with the spacing between notes, the strength of the
fingers, and the tendons. Art was one of the few to decide to use all four
fingers in his left hand, which has become the standard electric bass
fingering (although this doesn't seem to have much to do with Dr. Davis's
(right, Dr.? Pychiatrist?) decision as far as I can tell). This shift
allowed him to have quicker access to a wider range of notes without having
to shift (move his hand). It remains a fairly uncommon technical approach,
despite it's obvious benefits. He had the hands to do it, though, and not
all bassists do.
I'm fairly certain that he wrote a book on his left hand technique.
I would hate for anyone to think that I'm reducing his incredible career to
a simple matter of technique - please don't think that. I'm really just
hoping that this is something that you might find interesting, to add
another facet to whatever you may present.
Best,
Rick McLaughlin

I was trying to do the same thing, and I wanted to make sure that Art Davis
and Richard Davis are/were different people.

Lisa Hilton adds at radio August 6th. The CD has received rave reviews, and
many stations jumped early on the music, already placing it in the most
added section on two radio charts. As the producer, as well as the composer
and pianist, Hilton finds the early response gratifying:
