On August 10th 1936 in the Newark New Jersey suburb of Montclair, drummer/
vocalist Nathaniel "Nat" Yarbrough was born. Nat had lived in Denver since
the late 70s and was an inspiration and mentor to many musicians of Denver,
in particular saxists Javon Jackson and Brad Leali cite Nat as a major force
in their development. Nat passed away last night Thursday, just a few hours
short of his 71st birthday. Nat has been on the dialesis(sic) machine for
the past several year awaiting a kidney. Earlier this year there was a
tremendous outpouring of affection at Dazzle for a benefit and love fest for
Nat. Javon and Brad flew back to Denver from New York and Europe
respectively to be part of the event. Nat recorded 2 albums for Colorado's
Capri records, El Yabah and Triple Play which showcase his drumming and
vocal abilities. Nat Yarbrough will be sorely missed by all of us here in
Denver, he was one cool cat. My only regret is that I have not been able to
find a song he asked me to get him, he had been looking for a Sarah Vaughn
obscurity from 1951 titled Strange. All my research indicates this has never
been re-issued on CD and appears only on the original 10inch LP from '51. He
had planned to remake it for his next project.
