Two tracks in particular got a LOT of attention from listeners today - one
from 1957, the other from 1972, both available for the first time in quite a
while (as far as I know). Charlie Mingus' "Ysabel's Table Dance," with its
blend of jazz and Iberian castanet rhythms, comes across a half-century
after the fact as an early example of "world fusion", though not many people
seemed to have recognized that fact when it was originally released in 1962
(five years after its recording). Manu Dibango's biggest hit caused quite a
stir back in the early 70's, engendering a number of cover versions in the
U.S., and helping to pave the way for the acceptance of contemporary African
music in the U.S. Even though 35 years have passed, listeners still fine it
fresh and exciting, if my callers are any indication. Other tracks that got
the phones ringing included the unclassifiable Aqualash, the
classical/new-age piano of Switzerland's Antonius, Keith Bear's Native
American Flute extravaganza, and jazz guitarist Darin Layne. To the list:
Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa - World Hits
