MARIA SCHNEIDER begins SAJS this time with an
energized new cd, SKY BLUE.
The musicians are all highly regarded, by the way.
Simply read the liner notes and note. Schneider's
distinct flowing beautiful compositions as in her
other cd's, grace this newest- original- heroic-
mindful Americana.
Merge modern jazz with French impressionism to a Gil
Evans persona and Maria Schneider emerges as a
highlight of 21st Century post modernism. If that's
confusing enough, then you must listen for the true
effect to SKY BLUE. We played The Pretty Road with
Ingrid Jensen's morpheus trumpet special effects.
There are other very prominent views here. Aires De
Lando featuring Scott Anderson on clarinet and
Rich's Place with Richard Perry on saxophone.
And we've only scratched the surface-so to speak- of
this new cd.
TAD BRITTON/MARC SEALES/JEFF JOHNSON trio follow with
their new BLACK HILLS cd. We played Bill Evans,Time
Remembered. Marc Seales offers up a distinctive
interpretation of this song, always putting his unique
post modern impressions. He's Professor Of Jazz piano,
UW School Of Music.
Born in Sturgis South Dakota, drummer Tad Britton is a
small town modern jazz American story, similar to
Charlie Haden whose originally from Iowa.
Born and bred on country music, somehow the seduction
of modern jazz carries our dreams to other places.
In Britton's case, it was small towns in South Dakota,
then Oklahoma City where he played with 1980's
prominent jazz musicians, passing through town.
It's how you make your bones. And the subtle
maturation is apparent in this cd.
Chicago vocalist JUDY NIEMACK concludes this segment
with her new cd, BLUE NIGHTS. She sings an interesting
arrangement by Jeanfranco Pins of Dizzy Gillespie's
classic, Night In Tunisia. The tone of her voice is
scat nostalgic with Ella intonation. Judy Niemack has
the voice, control and temperment. She also has that
physicality of today's jazz vocalist. Bet she works
out, because the body is as much a part of
interpreting the lyric as the voice.
Unlike the myth of late night raucous, most post
modern jazz singers pay some dues on the treadmill.
The band here is also integral to the appeal of this
performance with Jim McNeely, Don Sickler, Gary Bartz,
Jeanfranco Pins, Dennis Ervin and Victor Lewis.
Enough said, if you know your business.
TOM HARRELL opens the next segment of SAJS, from his
new LIGHTS ON cd.
We played Va. Why? Cause it's a groove and reminds
us of Art Farmer/Bennie Golson Jazztet. The open
requests a right on of center bass line by Ugonna
Okegwo followed by Harrell's very centered horn play
as hard bop as they become, Wayne Escoffery's oft
tempo sax play and the mix and mash of such. The whole
thing about hard bop is the strut. And confess, I'm a
Danny Grissett fan from the L.A. days. He's learned
his early lessons well from the School of Hard Bop.
Pianist, educator RON DI SALVIO is next with his new
cd, ESSENCE OF GREEN-TRIBUTE TO KIND OF BLUE.
We played Six Shades Of Green in that modal usury.
DiSalvio has assembled a septet for his visionary ploy
to the post modern modality. This cd is anchored with
the great post modern drummer Jimmy Cobb and superb
bassist Rodney Whitaker. And we can dig it, especially
the Modernairesversion vocal on Essence Of Green
with ethereal lyrics on Miles Davis and other
modalities.
It brings to mind a flood of good memories of the All
Night Jazz Shows of past radios.
Ron Di Salvio teaches improvisation jazz piano at
Hillsdale and Kalamazoo colleges.
Saxophonist DAYNA STEPHENS concludes this segment from
his debut cd, THE TIMELESS NOW. Born and early
matriculation in Berkeley California, as another great
post modern saxophonist, David Murray, he's one of us.
These two, who we're most proud, have international
chops.
Dayna Stephens resembles Wayne Shorter in his scope,
performance and compositional skills. This is a young
man, who'll grow into a major jazz benefactor and
we'll hear from again very soon.
KENNY BURRELL begins the second hour of SAJS with his
75TH BIRTHDAY BASH LIVE! Recorded at Yoshi's last
year, this also features the great Gerald Wilson Big
Band. Both artists achieved the height of popularity
on FM jazz radio in the sixties. A day wouldn't go by
when you'd hear both in prominence. A major reason why
it's good to hear these two together on the bandstand.
We played the classic Viva Tirado and Stormy Monday
Blue/Blues For The Count where Kenny Burrell sings
the blues. Other special guest appear on this cd,
Hubert Laws, Joey DeFrancisco, Herman Riley, Jeff
Clayton and others.
DAVID CLAYTON-THOMAS is next and his new IN CONCERT
performance A MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY. In the
sixties,Thomas changed the scope of Blood, Sweat &
Tears with a slightly different soulful brand of
music. Organist Al Cooper was the lead singer on the
first B,S&T album and was more blues oriented as The
Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Thomas seemed to start a
trend of white soul singers. Joe Cocker followed up
with a great cover on a Beatle song, I Get By With A
Little Help From My Friends.
Of course, we had Bob Seger, Bob Hodge & Catfish and
Rare Earth in Detroit.
So a nice follow up to Kenny Burrell would be Thomas'
version of Self Centered Woman.
A very charismatic and natural vocalist ALEXIS COLE
concludes this segment with her interesting version of
Stompin At The Savoy and Gee Baby Ain't I Good To
You from her new ZINGARO cd.
ALEX SIPIAGIN begins the last segment of SAJS with the
title tune from his new PRINTS cd. Sipiagin is the
fantastic Russian trumpet player, who now resides in
New York City. This band is of a high all star caliber
with Chris Potter, Dave Kikoski, Scott Colley and
Antonio Sanchez. There's an interesting modality on
PRINTS- a sedated post bop aura with flutest Monday
Michiru sitting in on this song.
Reed player TIM ARMACOST is next with his new cd,
RHYTHM & TRANSFORMATION. Originally from Los Angeles,
Tim Armacost spent studying Indian and Hindustani
rhythms in New Dehli. Hence this interesting rather
modal composition.
It reminds me of some of Paul Winter's music of a few
decades ago.
Armacost adds more flavor and variety with Latin
rhythms as we played Nimble Pani, a gas of a tune
with Billy Hart, up in your navel cavity with dynamic
blending with the sitar. Dr. Eddie Henderson on
trumpet and flugelhorn and Bruce Barth on piano also
participate on this new cd.
PONCHO SANCHEZ latest is RAISE YOUR HAND, a funky
quest to Latin bop with Eddie Floyd, Booker T, Steve
Cropper and Maceo Parker. Since Sanchez is originally
from Texas and imbued with the rich Latin and R&B
traditions. This Poncho Sanchez would brew well in a
New Orleans gumbo as well as world wide. Take this
show on the road! We played El Agua De Pelen Andy
Montanez offers up a spirited vocal and the band jams.
This is maximum Poncho Sanchez, the hardest working
conga player in the world.
PONCHO NEVER WORKS ON WEDNESDAYS.
BOB LARK AND FRIENDS conclude SAJS with the
eternally blissful Joy Spring by Clifford Brown.
Along with Bud Powell's
Parisian Thoroughfares by Bud Powell and French new
wave cinema, my youth flashes joyfully before me.
