[JPL] What could happen without a passport in Toronto

A musician pal of mine, a Cuban living in the US since 1966, falied to take
along his passport when traveling to Montreal with a well known band for a
few gigs. When the tour was over and they were crossing back into the US, he
was asked for his passport and all he had was his California drivers license
so he pretended to be Puerto Rican, his bad luck was that the customs agent
was Puerto Rican and asked him a few questions about the island and he was
not able to answer them so the customs agent had him detained as a national
Cuban attempting to enter the US and take advantage of the wet foot/dry foot
law made only for Cubans. My friend was penalized for his "illegal entry
attempt" and was sentenced to have to stay in Canada for 3 years without
being allowed back into the USA. It turned out to be a fortunate
happenstance as now he is in high demand in Montreal as a musician,
composer, producer and arranger and may decide to stay in Montreal. I have
sent in my passport for renewal as I don't want to take any chances, I am
happy I saw the passport requirement notice on the IAJE site because mine
expired earlier this year and if not for the notice I wouldn't have realized
it until it was too late. In the 60s I was ready to move to Canada to avoid
being drafted for the Nam conflict but I am not ready to reside in Canada
now as I have too much going on in Denver and would miss my future
inheritors way too much.
