[JPL] "Nu-Jazz"

I've seen this term associated with many musicians lately but I'm not quite sure what it is. When I hear their music it sounds to me like smooth jazz. It doesn't swing....improvisation is minimal....usually with contrived blues and pentatonic noodling nonsense and the grooves are based on straight eighth note playing....like smooth or instrumental funk and even in that case it really isn't funky. Jeez. Has anyone else heard this term before? How would you describe it?
