[JPL] "Nu-Jazz"

Glad to see this topic coming up "a g a i n" ...From time to time for the
past few years I've been hoping that Jazz MDs/PDs would embrace this music.
Since "w e" are trying to "embrace" (or thought we were) the younger
audience I would hope that programmers would take this music in and
incorporate it with the "standard" jazz releases but have failed.

"Again" I hope programmers will try to take a 2nd ear to this music.

Good luck!

LR

I would venture to define "nu-jazz" as jazz dance orientated music. A
21st century version of "acid jazz" if you will.

I hear that term a'lot in dance club parlance

It's really hot in Europe and Asia especially with the dancers and club
dj's and it's starting to catch on here in the states

Some of the performers in the "nu jazz" camp would be

Nostalgia 77
Five Corners Quintet
Soil & Pimp Sessions
Kyoto Jazz Massive
Yesterday's New Quintet (Madlib)
St.Germain
Thievery Corporation
Quantic
Quasimode
Jazztronik
Amon Tobin
Koop

Even underground folk singer Terry Callier (remember him?) is now part
of the "Nu Jazz" scene

Labels that I can think of that specialize in "Nu Jazz" would be
Ubiquity here in the states; Compost in Germany and the Tru Thoughts
label out of the UK

Here is a link to a record store that specializes in it
http://www.phonicarecords.co.uk/genre.aspx?CatID=27

We started playing this kind of music late at night with a lot of
positive feedback with our younger listeners and on-line listeners from
overseas

Cheers!
Derrick

I've seen this term associated with many musicians lately but I'm not
quite sure what it is. When I hear their music it sounds to me like
smooth jazz. It doesn't swing....improvisation is minimal....usually
with contrived blues and pentatonic noodling nonsense and the grooves
are based on straight eighth note playing....like smooth or instrumental
funk and even in that case it really isn't funky. Jeez. Has anyone else
heard this term before? How would you describe it?
