[JPL] Digital Distribution for promo material

I am glad this discussion is taking place. I do think that down loading music is the unavoidable future. For low budget college stations like ours and volunteer music directors like mysel it is a tough bargain. I barely have time to get the music reviewed and out now. To have to download tunes, search for liner information if it is not conveniant takes too much time. I already have a tough time with having to repackage music that is sent in flat packs (economically convenient yes, but, they get lost in the stacks if they are not cut up and put in jewel cases). We are working on digitizing our massive collection, but, this remains a long way off. Music that comes well marked and in convenant packages gets on the shelf in this station quicker and gets airplay. Best, Eric Leff WRUV Burlington, VT

For pianist and producer Lisa Hilton's latest recording, ''The New York Sessions'', Hilton assembled a group of true jazz royalty, but it took a little bit of luck. Hilton recalls meeting trumpeter Jeremy Pelt: ''We chatted at Dizzy's in Manhattan, and later when I asked him to record, he remembered me and agreed to play, along with drummer Lewis Nash. Recording on a Sunday and Monday, also allowed Hilton to work with in-demand bassist Christian McBride, and Steve Wilson on sax. ''These musicians, and my engineer, Al Schmitt, are the best: they are a 'Dream Team''', Hilton comments, ''and the music sounds terrific.'' ''The New York Sessions'' has an August release date with Koch Distribution.

Hi Mark,

I've used digital downloadable wav. files for packages that I've
assembled for air, but not for regular rotation. Mp3 files are not
adequate for air purposes here at CPN. It would require totally
revamping how we store product in our bins that we pull song selections
from. At this point in time it's not practical so I will have to echo
the majority of sentiments from the JPL panel.

I just thought I would share with you how "we have" used digital wav.
files downloaded from the internet.

Aloha,

Bobby Jackson

Folks,

I'd like to get some opinions from programmers on receiving promotional
music via digital distribution. It's an inevitable path that all labels
will
eventually be traveling down; some such as ECM are already doing it in
the
jazz world.

Will not having access to physical product hinder airplay? Is it a
welcome
medium for stations that are using automation software?

Thanks,

Mark
