Paul wrote <<< I am really saddened to hear this. Hector LaVoe, was always
one of my
favorite singers, in any style or idiom, and I continue to enjoy his
recordings. I was always troubled to hear of his difficulties, and had
hoped (perhaps foolishly) for some insight into the man from this
movie. It seems to me that Marc Anthony, who came up in Hector's
shadow, should know better than this. But then, when have we ever
gotten a proper bio-pic of a great American musician from Hollywood? >>>
Thanks for your comments, I'm thrilled to hear you're a fan of La Voe. Being
perfectly frank I am not a big fan of Héctor's style, he tends to be too
Puerto Rican country for my ears, however that doesn't diminish his
importance in my book, regardless of my own personal tastes. La Voe was
extremely popular not only in NY and Puerto Rico but in Colombia and Panamá
as well as in every Puerto Rican or salsa community around the world. I can
tell you that Marc and Jenny grew up listening to more Latin pop and hip hop
than classic hard-core NY salsa, I know this from those I know that are
close to them and or are musicians in their respective bands. Marc
"discovered" La Voe about 10 years ago after he had passed. I can also add
that despite his life long fight with the drug demons and having a terrible
rep for being late to his shows or as he would often bark, I'm not late, you
all were early arrivals", La Voe was a generous man and would often appear
free of charge at concerts that were raising funds for causes he believed
in. Héctor was alo extremly proud to be Puerto Rican and would be involved
with issues concerning his beloved island and its people wherever they may
be found.
As far as proper bio-pics, as a persnickety bio-film viewer, I would say
that the ones I thought were done well keeping true to the facts as well as
being entertaining and most all of high music quality are IMO Ray and The
Buddy Holly Story with D'Lovely rating above average.
