Today tuesday evening I have finally recovered enough to get on line after
having a molar extracted this morning, I had severe tooth nerve pain over
the weekend and was kinda numbed by pain killers which is why I forgot that
Bobby Jackson and Mike Valentine were sitting next to me that wonderful
night in January 2000 at Mappy Torres' El Taller(the Workshop)when we saw
the arrival of Dafnis Prieto to NYC.
Dafnis' home town of Santa Clara, Cuba is famed for the legendary mule that
did not belong to anyone, just roamed the streets allowing all to feed him
and had a particular fondness for beer. He never allowed anyone to take him
to their home or ranch, he was a street burro, citizens of Santa Clara
claimed he was the reincarnation and departed spirit of a town drunk and
hobo as the mule appeared shortly after his death. The burro was around for
about 20 plus years, (1940s to '60s )when he died, the town loved him so
much they erected a statue of his likeness in the plaza, "El Burro Pancho"
lives on forever
