I think Eric J. was on to something. Might be an interesting research project to look at the existing "real books" and "fake books" and see which composers are most often represented. That's only one measure and you can certainly make arguments based on taste and various other subjective aesthetic factors. Another measure is to search the Harry Fox Agency to see which jazz composer's tunes are most used and recorded.
