[JPL] A library question...

Both Dorothee Berryman, who I work for as a personal researcher, and I
program from our personal collections at home and with no interference from
our stations, hers, goverment run, mine, community radio. I say let the
program reflect the person on the air - hopefully you can fine knowledgeable
people to do this. I have been doing jazz radio since the seventies, Ms.
Berryman, a stage and screen actor and jazz singer, has been on the air
(across Canada in French) for the past five years. We both go to hear a
goodly amount of live music together and talk to the musicians. So many
radio voices here are simply that radio voices, who are never seen at
events, unless they are paid to be there, and play music picked by their
producers. "Current", I see no importance as to when a piece was recorded,
this year or in the 40s (my area of expertise). I'd rather play Lee Wiley
as opposed to a Norah Jones or the awful Ms. Peyroux. A knowledgeable
friend said that her last Montreal had her failing to sing in tune and
looking like she was terrified to be in front of an audience. I heard her
years ago at the same jazz festival and thought she belonged in the C/W
field not jazz - I left quite quickly! I find most of the younger singers I
speak to have no idea who Lee Wiley and Mildred Bailey are never mind Nancy
King. Thank God for singers like Sheila Jordan, Helen Merrill, Roberta
Gamberini, Libby York, Barbara Lea, Rebecca Kilgore, Dena DeRose,Judy Wexler
and Connie Evingson to name a few! Dorothee just did a superb concert with
the McGill Chamber Orchestra, a singer's dream gig.

Subject: [JPL] A library question...
Greetings Jazz Gurus,
How long do you keep currents "current" and how long do you keep releases in
the "re-current" section? Also, when you add new music (or if you have
retro-fitted your music library, as we are about to do)...are you adding an
entire CD or do you select only a few cuts for air.
In the past, we have allowed our announcers to play any viable cut from a
CD,
something I have enjoyed because it really opens up the musical
possibilities
and prevents us from creating "hit" radio. But, our library is out of
control now and we will begin a serious effort in the early part of next
year
to tame the beast.
I'd love to hear from programmers and from artists/industry people as well
on
this.
Many thanks in advance,
Claudia
