Winding it up (while the egg nog wears off), Ken Lister and Roy Styffe were
set to drop into the show in advance of Ken's gig at the Cellar last weekend
but plans were undone by the weather and travel logistics. Started with some
bassists in his absent honour (he was absent, not his honour), Mingus'
juxtaposition of our theme with Exactly Like You and some Paul Chambers
which led into a gig connection with Phil Dwyer's performance of Whims.
I've been really taken with the *Wave Mechanics Union*, an outfit based out
of Indianapolis (I think) who do large ensemble jazz arrangements of
progressive rock and classic rock tunes. I've long been interested in the
idea of the 'new standards', in which new generations of jazz musicians draw
on music of their (our!) time rather than recycling the great American song
book again and again. (viz. Brad Mehldau with Radiohead, Nick Drake; The Bad
Plus with Nirvana, David Bowie; everybody with Joni Mitchell) I think it's a
little ironic that aging rockers turn to the standards book for some late
career credibility when folks like the Wave Mechanics Union are making some
great music, having a blast and drawing a new audience into the music. They
obviously love these tunes and have the chops to re-interpret and make them
fresh.
Touched on the tunes by the Who and Yes but the title is taken from Led
Zepp's The Rain Song which is covered nicely as well. The intricate
arrangement and rhythms on Heart of the Sunrise is a real standout although
I'd have a mild criticism that Lydia McAdams' vocal is a little too close to
Jon Anderson's original. She certainly has the voice to do it but I think
she would have been able to give it a more personalized interpretation had
she dropped it an octave. Highly recommended nonetheless, see
http://www.progjazz.com/ for more details and clips.
Tim Warfield's Criss Cross release was another standout this year and in the
new standards vein, we hit his Sidewinder-tinged attack on the Sonny Bono
classic. (There's actually a local gig connection, the B-3 player on the
date, Pat Bianchi is coming to the Cellar with Joey DeFrancesco in the new
year.) Speaking of B-3, Ben Sidran's organ recording from this year filled
out the set nicely.
Then a couple of late arrivals, an extended feature on Sheila Jordan's
recent release on Justin Time which was keyed to coincide with her 80th
birthday in November. She's in fine voice on this relaxed and swinging date
recorded in Montreal at the Upstairs club in February of this year which
ranks up there with the best of her Muse, Blackhawk and Steeplechase work.
Here's hoping she makes another visit to the west coast before too long. And
Amanda Tosoff's recent release which I got too late for her cd release
concert.
A nod to Prince Lasha's passing in an mid-60s Ornette groove and a look
ahead to Joe Locke's gig in January. The connecting thread on Dave Holland's
latest and the Alvin Queen reissue is trombonist Robin Eubanks with
appearances more than 20 years apart, but both top-notch releases this year.
One more feature for Ken Lister with Hugh Fraser and I'd heard through the
grapevine that they'd be playing Nutville so Horace Silver made it too. Took
it out with Garaj Mahal in advance of their upcoming Richards on Richards on
Tuesday Dec. 30 and that's the anatomy of a radio show.
