ON THIS WEEKS SHOW - Sunday 24th February
On the coming show we are hoping to have a chat to velvet voiced
Kevin Mahogany, there may be a wee problem as his travel schedule
might not be suited to the time of the interview. So I’ve asked
Barbara Collin of Collins Artists from Los Angeles, who has been
kindly facilitating the interview schedule over the past weeks, to
see if we could swop dates around a bit and speak to Sheila Jordan
this week and then chat to Kevin next the following Sunday show.
We’re just awaiting confirmation.
We will also be chatting to Prof Hotep Idris Galeta in the Eastern
Cape about the importance of music education and have invited Frank
Paco and Muriel Marco into our Cape Town Studios to chat about TUCAN
TUCAN being finalists in the International Song-writing Competition,
see story below.
As usual our regular selection of great music from right here at home
and the far flung corners of our global village, so remember to tell
all family and friends to tune into Radio 2000 for Jazz Rendezvous
every Sunday evening at 5pm (SA time). It’s part of your radio
lifestyle and not to be missed.
Do remember too you can also chat on air to me or any of our guests
by calling our on air telephone number 089 110 2003 or if you’re out
side of the boarders of South Africa the number is 27 (0)89 110 2003

AN OPEN LETTER FROM LEADING SOUTH AFRICAN TRUMPETER & COMPOSER MARCUS
WYATT
My name is Marcus Wyatt, I am a South African recording artist based
in Johannesburg. As well as my solo albums, I have performed and/or
recorded with numerous artists such as Miriam Makeba, Bheki Mseleku,
Abdullah Ibrahim, Manu Dibango and many more.
I recently left Sheer Sound to start my own label Language 12,and
last year released the album “Language 12” under this new company.
The project features the best on the South African jazz scene, and
has been hailed by fans and critics alike. The South African sound is
moving forward, and this project is right on that edge, combining the
traditional with the not so traditional.
I have been invited to play the Rochester International Jazz Festival
in June 2008in New York. The invitation came after the producer from
Rochester saw the Language 12 project perform to packed houses at the
Stockholm Jazz Festival 2007, Sweden.
Rochester is a very prestigious festival to play, and musicians on
the local scene in New York City hotly contest slots. Only issue is
it is a festival spread out around clubs and venues in the Rochester
area, and thus they do not have budget to fly artists from all
corners of the globe. What they do though is a huge amount of promo
and publicity for all artists booked, and has featured (amongst
others) Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, John Scofield, Avishai Cohen
and Geri Allen.
Siya Makuzeni (singer/lyricist from Language 12) and I will fly to
New York to collaborate with Brian Jackson, who writes and produces
with Gil Scott-Heron. We will rehearse in NYC, and do a few little
club gigs, and then go up to Rochester for the festival. In order to
facilitate this, I will need about R60 000. I have approached
Transnet, NAC and DAC for assistance but am still waiting … if you
can help in any way, whether it be a substantial sponsorship or a
small donation, it would be of huge significance to the Language 12
project, and to South African Jazz.
If you need more detail (sponsorship, branding at the festival etc),
or simply want to assist, please email me at this address
marcus at marcuswyatt.com
I realize this isn’t your everyday request, but have a listen to
some tracks @ www.myspace.com/marcuswyatt and www.marcuswyatt.com and
consider this seriously.
Thanx for your interest and support

A Note from jazz vocalist Alison Dewar in London
2008 has started on a high note for Alison after health reasons made
the second half of 2007 a time of rest.
She recently received the personal stamp of approval from the
legendary Randy Weston for her recording of his composition, ‘Hi
Fly’ (on Natural cd), calling it “Wonderful”.
Since the release of her debut album, Natural, last spring, the cd
has gone from strength to strength. It was voted CD of the Week on
various radio stations spanning across 3 continents: Scotland,
Greece, Italy, South Africa and Columbia. She has also received very
favourable airplay in the UK and the US and Alison was voted Artist
of the Month on a London-based internet-radio station. Natural was
also recently chosen as one of the Top 20 new releases of 2007 in
Greece.
Interviewed as an artist “Taking Off” by Jazzwise magazine and
described as “Major Talent” by Solfest, Cumbria, 2008 is sure to
be a great year for Alison.
In 2008, we’ll find her preparing to record her second album due for
release in 2009.
She starts off this year with a much-awaited gig at Pizza Express
Maidstone on Sat, 16 Feb where she’ll joined by the superb Graham
Harvey (p), Alec Dankworth (b) and Matt Skelton (d).
In March we’ll see her with a new line-up of excellent musicians. On
Wed, 5 March she’ll be at the fabulous Spice of Life accompanied by
Robin Aspland (p), Jeremy Brown (b) and Winston Clifford (d). Her
last gig at the Spice was labelled by a member of the audience as
“the best gig I’ve been to for 30 years”.
On Thursday, 6 March, she’ll be at the wonderful Octave in Covent
Garden and will be well supported by Robin Aspland (p) once again
and joined by the great Dave Chamberlain (b).
All 3 evenings promise to be enchanting and fun, filled with warmth
and sincerity.
With “an impressive variety of standards, classics, bossas and
ballads” (Evening Standard), accompanied by the exciting sounds of
great musicians, these evenings should not be missed!

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS In South Africa with a few weird international ones

THE MONTH AHEAD - FEBRUARY
The word "February" comes from the Latin word februare, meaning, "to
purify." The ancient Romans had their annual purification ceremony
during this time each year.
February birthstone: amethyst. February flower: violet or primrose.
February was invented by Numa Pompilius. Numa was a Roman king, and
that's all I know about him. And that's all I want to know about him.
February is National Weddings Month. Most engagements take place
between Christmas and Valentine's Day, and most future brides start
serious planning in February for summer weddings.
February 19 is . . . . National Chocolate Mint Day - National Nose-
Blowing Day, a day for everyone with a stuffy nose to stop everything
at nigh-noon and blow seriously for 10 seconds. Then take a deep
breath - Spunky Old Broads Day, a day for celebration for spunky
ladies over 50 - Straw Wrapper Appreciation Day, a day to remember
how much fun it was to blow the wrapper off a straw.
February 20 is . . . . 2008 National Budget Speech by the Minister of
Finance, Trevor A Manuel - Love Your Pet Day – Cat Christmas Day,
cats are different therefore demand their own day, you know the old
independent streak, just see any Garfield Cartoon Strip – Call An
Old Friend Day, a day to phone someone you haven’t talked to in a
very long time - Love Your Pet Day - Toothpick Day. The toothpick was
patented on this date in 1872 - Northern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day.
At noon everyone yells "Hoodie-Hoo" to chase away winter and make way
for spring - Flying Car Day. The first flying car, the Arrowmobile,
was tested on this date in 1937.
February 21 is . . . . International Mother Language Day sponsored by
the United Nations - Card Reading Day - Remember the Funniest Thing
Your Child Ever Did Day, always on late humorist Erma Bombeck’s
birthday - Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day - Ash Wednesday,
marking the beginning of Lent, observed in many Christian churches as
a period of fasting and penitence - Single Tasking Day, a day to do
only one thing at a time without feeling guilty - Giving Day, a day
to give someone something, even if it's merely encouragement -
Martyrs Day in Bangladesh.
February 22 is . . . . International World Thinking Day - Be Humble
Day - Call Somebody "Boo Boo" Day, just to see what they call you -
National Chili Day, sponsored by the Hard Times Cafe in Locust Grove,
Virginia - World Thinking Day - National Be Humble Day - Teddy Bear
Day - Independence Day in Saint Lucia - 3-day Sourdough Rendezvous
begins today in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
The Week Ahead Observances - FEBRUARY:

- Child Car Safety Week - Kraut and Frankfurter Week Vocational/
Technical Education Week - Muffin Mania Week - Just Say "No" to
PowerPoint Week - Love a Mensch Week - National Nest Box Week begins
today, time to put up a bird house - Random Acts of Kindness Week, a
time to be blatantly nice to everyone, even total strangers. Unless,
of course, they're totally strange total strangers, the you might
want to blatantly smile and be totally careful - National Engineers

Week 4: Fairytale Week - Week of Kindness – Pancake Week - Health
Education Week - Pay Your Bills Week - Wine Appreciation Week –
World Friendship Week - The annual Jalapeno Festival is this week in
Laredo, Texas. The main event is the big contest to see who can eat

QUOTES OF THE WEEK
There are notes between notes, you know. - Sarah Vaughan
Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom. If you
don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. They teach you there's
a boundary line to music. But, man, there's no boundary line to art.
- Charlie "Yardbird" Parker
Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that
people own it. - John Lennon
Music, in performance, is a type of sculpture. The air in the
performance is sculpted into something. - Frank Zappa
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain. - Bob

JOKE OF THE WEEK
How to buy a HIFI
1. Carefully calculate power requirements, based on room dimensions,
etc. Multiply by a factor of 100.
2. The ideal system should have as many lights as possible,
preferably blinking and flashing in time with the music.
3. The components should all have black metal finish, and generally
look very cool.
4. The system should be broken up into as many components as
possible. (e.g. pre-amp, pre-pre-amp, pre-menstrual-amp, post-amp,
post-menopause-amp, etc.)
5. The most important part of a stereo system is the speakers, they
should look very cool. Size and number of sub-speakers and varieties
of components pointed at the listener is important. (e.g. tweeters,
hooters, sub-woofers, super-sub-woofers, seismic noise generators, etc.)
6. The system should resemble the cockpit of an F16 or 757 aircraft;
the more knobs and dials you can turn, the better.
7. The system should have full remote control capability, including
over the mobile auto cellular phone so that the stereo can be playing
as you get home.
8. Should have the capability of playing different music in every
room of the house.
9. Components should have a cool names; this means no department
store brands.
10. The complete set-up should put a major recording studio or large
radio station to shame. After all, you may be trying to duplicate the
exciting feeling of being at a heavy metal concert in a football
stadium with 70,000 screaming fans.
11. Having state-of-the-art equipment is not enough. You should be a
year or two ahead of everyone else. Equipment over the warranty
period is obsolete and should be disposed of promptly.
12. The most important factor--out of everyone you know who owns
stereo equipment, yours should be better.
