ERIC ALAN¹S JAZZ RENDEZVOUS NEWS LETTER Vol 1 week 1 - January 2008
The Old Year has been relegated to the history but the good will remain in
the forefront of memory to be carried into the birth of the New Year with a
prayer that the future will become better for all in our wonderful country
that is South Africa.
I¹d like to take this opportunity to wish you, the wonderful fans of Jazz
Rendezvous, a wonderful and happy New Year and that the fruits of you
labour, the right opportunities come your way and lead to the safety and
prosperity you wish for in the coming months.
Congratulations go to the winners of our Alison Dewar Competition, Tony
Gillespie from Durban, Steve Kirkupv from Orange Grove, Bernie Watson from
Westville, Alan Collier from Glenherd, PE and Peter Watson of Cape Town your
CD¹s will be on the way to you very soon. We hope to have another
competition for you soon, keep your ears peeled to you radio every Sunday.
The question is should I prepare for the extra hour or should I not. What
are your feelings, will the boys have a fighting chance or not, please email
me your advice as I am faced with a huge dilemma. You see last week I did
not prepare and was caught and I had to extend the Oscar Peterson Tribute,
which was no problem at all. I must, however add and many of you have
agreed, for the emails I received, that for a jazz novice the gorgeous
Nicole da Silva did a great job given the short notice of the extra hour. I
must also acknowledge studio producer Tim Zunkle and offer a huge word of
thanks for the sterling job he did in contacting and connecting all our
guests from the global village that is the world. I¹d also like to thank my
studio guests Maurice Gavronsky and Clarence Ford as well as our telephone
guests, Tutu Puoane, Jack van Poll, Estelle Kokot, Sathima Bea Benjamin and
Harry Sideropoulis for taking time out to speak to us. We will, over future
programs be talking to them again.
Thanks to all who sent emails and called the studios with your wishes they
were most beautiful and very much appreciated.
Now on to the business at hand our very first show of 2008.
Once again we will be starting Jazz Rendezvous at 6pm as opposed the usual
time due to our underperforming cricket team, The Protea¹s playing against
the rampant West Indies. After their historical triumphant victory over the
past weekend the question remains will our team be able to pick themselves
up from the depths of depression of defeat? Some say yes and some say no. I
have a theory, it¹s all in the name you see, a bunch of flowers does not
live long in water, they go limp unless the water is freshened from time to
time and eventually succumb to the inevitable. At least Springboks have the
strength and agility to escape the jaws of a predator. I guess we¹ll see
what occurs this week.
Let¹s not dwell on the past but look forward to the future and the best
place to start with is JAZZ RENDEZVOUS. We will have our exciting monthly
feature, ³It's just a job to some but Oh boy what a great job I have, I love
it so much so that even if it were very early on a Sunday morning I would
just get up to go to work if I had to² and our special guest is an expert in
his chosen field, Ryan Hill works for Universal Music Publishing, South
Africa. If you are a musician or not you will have the opportunity to ask
him any questions live on air, about his job, how you become involved in the
music publishing business or what the job entails.
Our second guest need little introduction, Abdullah Ibrahim who arrives home
on Saturday around 5pm from a successful extended European season, will be
joining us to tell us about the series of concerts he will be performing in
the country. We will also open the telephone lines for you to engage him
with a question or two. It¹s the first time in a few years that I¹ve had him
in on Jazz Rendezvous so it¹s going to be great to see what he¹s been up to
since our last conversation some 3 or 4 years ago. We¹ll also find out about
his plans for the year ahead.
Remember our on-air phone number is 089 110 2003 for those all those
important questions you have for any of our studio guests.
We will in future invite more of my colleagues to be co-hosts of Jazz
Rendezvous from time to time and should you have any suggestions send me an
email, please.
With the success of the Christmas and New Years recipes we will from time to
time include 1 or 2 through the programmes over the coming year and should
you have a favourite please let us know and we will share it with all our
very discerning and adventurous family of good music lovers.
Oh, by the way should you have any suggestions of future guests you¹d like
to hear about on the show just pop me an email to eric at radio2000.co.za or
eric at jazzrendezvous.co.za at your convenience and we¹ll try to accommodate
you wishes. The same applies for any music requests you may have.
I¹ll see you on the wireless on Sunday and entice your friends to join you
around your Hi Fi with you and their favourite tipple to hand. In fact
here¹s a recipe for a couple more for you to try:

The Hokey Pokey - Shakespearean Style
The Hokey Pokey
Original Lyrics
Put your left foot in,
Your left foot out,
Your left foot in,
And shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey
And turn yourself around
That's what it's all about.
The Hokey Pokey
Shakespearean Style
O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke.
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from heaven's yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt.
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.
