Hello friends,

Here's to 2008!  

I'm looking forward to a year of health, happiness and marvelous music.

I thank many, many of you for your e-mails, cards and calls as I coped 
with cancer in '07.  I've been back at work since December 3rd but 
decided to do a "soft launch".  My strength and stamina is returning 
slowly.  Five years from now I plan to regard the cancer episode as 
just a blip on my life's radar screen.

I will be more active on the list once again.  I look forward to being 
eventually caught up on new music.  And, I look forward to catching up 
with many of you online or on the phone after the IAJE conference.

I am not going to attend the IAJE conference this year.  There are 
financial issues, and I probably couldn't handle it physically as 
well.  But, there is the JazzWeek summit in June!  I'll have hugs a-
plenty for all.

I have some VERY good news to share with you regarding WEMU.  Our new 
evening jazz host and chief librarian will be the legendary Evelynn 
Hawkins!  Yes--that Evelynn who created documentaries on Mary Lou 
Williams, was the music director for WCPN and WDUQ and who hosted some 
of the finest panels ever at the IAJE conference.  We are truly 
excited and honored to have Evelynn join our krewe!  Her first evening 
show will be Wednesday, January 9th.

So, here's to 2008, to Evelynn Hawkins, to life, to love, to you.
