Along with Feliciano, Hendrix and Gaye's take on the olde English drinking
song that the Star Spangled Banner is based on, Grover Washington Jr
performed a remarkable rendition for an NBA all-star game in the mid-70s. If
memory serves me correct he played it upon the behest of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
who arranged for him to be chosen.

On another note, there's a terrifc version of both the Star Spangled Banner
(ala doo-wop) and America the Beautiful by former Zappa's Ruben & The Jets
member, Rubén Guevara recorded on the second Rhino LP RLP 002, circa 1978,
it was pressed on multi-color vinyl. I don't know if it was ever re-issued
on CD, the compilation LP was titled Rhino Royale and it included songs by
wrestler Freddie Blassie and the Temple City Kazoo Band playing Led Zep's
Whole Lotta love.
