Actually Ed...Jimi recorded a studio version of the SSB. A lot of people don't know that. I do believe it was released on "Rainbow Bridge"...a masterpiece long out of print...and it's very clear he's playing the anthem. Ditto at Woodstock albeit more loosely. He played every note of the melody and form. At times embellished yes but never the less the anthem. One could argue that if they play anything other than the melody on the SSB it's no longer the composition. That's what it sounds like you're saying. Jazz musicians do that all the time but we don't say they're not playing the tune.
