This was an education to me: I thought the "negro national anthem" was
"After Hours." Will program Geri Allen's version of "Lift Every Voice"
this weekend in honor of the 4th.
Rene's version sounds very creative -- she did what jazz musicians
have always done and will always do. Ever heard Mingus's versions of
two melodies played simultaneously? Music is material and in her case
was used to represent a coming together -- these lyrics, that melody =
unity. But our media doesn't leave a hairs breath of space for people
to consider that. So 700 quick to judge people boo-ed rather than
thought about what it really meant. Hey, let's celebrate the less
imagintive knee jerk emotionalism coming from misguided beliefs in
majority "ownership" issues rather than the voice of the artist. Rene
Marie is as American as can be. Hope she makes a record of it. In
other news, I wonder what the French thought of Albert Ayler's version
of "Les Marseilles"?
