[JPL] Vancouver Jazz Festival Shines/Galaxie Rising Award Winner

Vancouver's signature festival—the TD Canada Trust Vancouver International
Jazz Festival —has just completed its most successful presentation to date.
Under sunny skies and with broad and expansive programming at over 40 indoor
and outdoor venues the 23rd annual Festival drew in excess of 500,000 people
confirming once again its status as British Columbia's  biggest and most
anticipated music and arts event.



A big thanks to all the musicians, staff, sponsors and volunteers for making
our 11-day event so spectacular.



Highlights were numerous with special mention going to Dave Brubeck, Pink
Martini, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Michael Blake, Barry Guy New Orchestra, Ryan
Shaw, Maceo Parker, John Scofield, Iro Haarla, Red Holloway and the Night
Crawlers, Five Alarm Funk, Tim Berne's Bloodcount, Herbie Hancock, Seun
Kuti, Sylvie Courvosier/Mark Feldman, Naturally 7, Jesse Cook and Coco Zhao
for outstanding performances. The jam sessions at O'Douls with Wynton
Marsalis and members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra sitting in over
two nights will go down in Vancouver jazz history. Unforgettable!


In additon, we are pleased to announce that this year's winner of the annual
Galaxie Rising Stars Award presented at the TD Canada Trust Vancouver
International Jazz Festival is the Chris Davis Quartet. This highly engaging
band is led by trumpeter Chris Davis and features Amanda Tosoff piano, Sean
Cronin bass, and Morgan Childs drums.

The TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival *and *Galaxie, The
Continuous Music Network of the CBC*, are proud to announce the Chris Davis
Quartet as the winners of the 6th annual Galaxie Rising Stars Award. Chosen
from the artists competing for the Award as the new artist of the year, the
winner will receive a $2000 grant.

Originally from Florida, trumpeter *Chris Davis *is one of the most
compelling young voices in the Vancouver jazz scene. He brings a soulful and
sometimes humourous flare to the bandstand echoing many of the greats such
as Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, and Woody Shaw. In a relatively
short time, Chris has become of the most in-demand musicians in Vancouver.
His stellar quartet features some of the most talented young players in the
city: *Amanda Tosoff *piano, *Sean Cronin *bass, and *Morgan Childs *drums.

The 23rd annual TD Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival has
just completed one its most successful seasons to date. With over 1800
musicians from around the world performing at over 40 indoor and outdoor
venues throughout the city, the Festival drew record crowds in excess of
500,000 people confirming its status as Vancouver's biggest music and arts
event. Musicians and audiences alike herald the Festival as one of the best
cultural celebrations in the world.

The Galaxie Rising Stars Program champions Canadian talent by supporting the
development and promotion of our musicians. Working with more than 50
partners of the music industry across the country, the Galaxie Rising Stars
Program of the CBC encourages our up-and-coming stars. To date, over 650
artists and groups have benefited from the Program. Past winners from the TD
Canada Trust Vancouver International Jazz Festival include Amanda Tosoff
Quartet (2007), October Trio (2006), Inhabitants (2005), Jodi Proznick
(2004) and Michael Zachernuk (2003).
