1958

This was a year that found Miles re-hiring Coltrane,
and adding Cannonball Adderly and Bill Evans along
with Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers to create one of the
finest bands in the history of the music. Thelonious
Monk recorded a scorching session with Art Blakey’s
Jazz Messengers, who, in turn, recorded the funky,
gospel influenced ‘Moanin’, a soulful union of church
and r&b that would be echoed by players as diverse as
Ray Charles and James Brown. Chess records continued
to churn out blues from New Orleans and Chicago. Add
some Mingus, Sun Ra, and a fascinating interview with
Jack Kerouac, and we get more than a sound bite of the
year that was.

Dharma Bums, Old Yeller, Vertigo and The Fly all form
a backdrop for this cultural stew. Tune in and hear
Beat Poetry, real rock n roll, doo wop, hard bop and a
late night dollop of Sinatra, Holiday and Blossom.
Enjoy!
