Yes, that's true. I was still living in L A at the time and still in my
original profession of retail jewler/gemologist/horologist, he lost a
massive collection of LPs-this was the late 70s or early 80s, cassettes,
reel-to-reels, books, zines, autographs, photos etc.... coming up in Harlem
USA in the early 60s his mentor Wilt used to get him into his own jazz club,
Big Wilt's Small Paradise. Kareem also lost an extensive and expensive
collection of Persian rugs he collected throughout his jounerys to the
Middle East and No Africa
A local com FM station that used to be a jazz station and had converted to
Pop music donated their former library, it barely made a dent in his loss.
Since then and with the advent of CDs and massive re-issues, Kareem has been
able to replace a good portion of his collection. His parents, both from the
Caribbean, met while dancing at the Savoy Ballroom There's a You Toob clip
of Kareem playing congas with Dave Valentín earlier this year
