Late on chiming in on this, but ... I agree with your comments about the CD.
I, too, appreciated the bluesy rootsiness and the restraint. Wynton turns in
some very impressive solos on a set of material that contrasts with his
usual work. Willie? Not so much. I'd classify his solos as "interesting" but
not compelling.
Will be interesting to see who buys this CD and where it gets airplay. Most
folks, jazz fans or otherwise, know about Willie. But most Willie fans
likely don't know Wynton's playing very well.
I've listened to a lot of "Americana" (roots-country, country folk, twang
rock, bluegrass) in recent years, and I've grown fond of the genre. This
disc strikes me, primarily, as an Americana disc "plus," with extra added
blues/jazz elements, and, secondarily, as a jazz disc. Not that there's
anything wrong with that.
