I don't know about "the best," but he's certainly one of the best-known recording engineers in jazz, in part because he's worked on some of our favorite recordings. But then, how do you compare him to Tom Dowd, Fred Plaut, Al Schmitt, George Massenberg, Phil Ramone, Stan Tonkel, Jan-Erik Kongshaug, Jim Anderson, David Baker or any of the great engineers who worked for labels that didn't give them any credits?
