The first time I ever saw an engineer's name listed on a jazz record was on
Lennie Tristano's Jazz label - it was a 78rpm of "Ju-Ju" b/w "Pastime" and
the name was Rudy Van Gelder - this is pre-LP days. October 30, 1951 was the
recording date.
It was a longtime after that listing the engineer became the norm.

> I second that Tom--Van Gelder is simply the best--
I don't know about "the best," but he's certainly one of the best-known
recording engineers in jazz, in part because he's worked on some of our
favorite recordings. But then, how do you compare him to Tom Dowd, Fred
Plaut, Al Schmitt, George Massenberg, Phil Ramone, Stan Tonkel, Jan-Erik
Kongshaug, Jim Anderson, David Baker or any of the great engineers who
worked for labels that didn't give them any credits?
