[JPL] RTF

Bobby....Anthony (I know you wrote off list Anthony)....wow...I never knew Earl played with RTF. I can't possibly imagine how that would have sounded but I'm curious as to if the band at that time was focusing on electric or acoustic? You both know RTF started out mainly acoustic with the exception of the use of the Rhodes and I could see Earl more in the acoustic situation than what eventually developed. Frankly, I'm surprised Chick went with Earl but there must have been a reason why that mix was short lived.

It's interesting Bobby that when I listen to "Where Have I Known You Before," Di Meola sounds like Connors to me. I think that was a transitional record for them but killin. Stanley Clarke plays one of the greatest electric bass solos every recorded IMO on "Vulcan Worlds. Just ridiculous. They still had a little of that raw-ness left over from when Connors was in the group. That precision really started to come out on "No Mystery" in my view and to a head on "Romantic Warrior."

By the way...any of you ever heard Connor's..."Of Mist and Melting?" On ECM. An acoustic masterpiece with DeJohnette, Garbarek and I think Peacock...if I can remember.

Hey Bobby,
I caught that RTF tour in Spring 1974 with Earl (at Reed College in Oregon), fully expecting Bill Connors, whom I enjoyed the most (like Jae). Earl and I saw each other frequently for a few years serving duty with the Recording Academy. I told him I caught him with RTF, he looked at me quizzically, with a somewhat pained face and said, "Hmmm, you did?"

I love Earl, he is a wonderful person and a gifted guitarist, but I am sure he knew what I felt, and that it was not a good fit. More if you want.

Stay strong, Dear Brother,

PS: The Asian American Orchestra is coming east: residency/concert November 4-7 at the University of Illinois, Urbana. Looking to fill Saturday, November 8th, if you have any ideas.
