[JPL] Pronuncination

Obviously, Calvin Newborn would be the one to know...

As I understood it, he was properly known as "Fine-us" as a child, but
grew tired somewhere along the line of the "Fine Ass" teasing he often
got - so he, himself, made "Finn-ee-us" his preferred way of being
addressed. I think this is recounted in the liner notes to one of his
albums, though I can't recall now which one. My former (now retired)
colleague at WBEZ, jazz DJ Larry Smith, told me on several occasions
that he got a similar version of that same story from Phineas many years
ago. So perhaps both versions are actually correct on some level.

I've met Calvin several times and he always referred to his brother as
"Finn-ee-us." Their fathers' name was Finas, so maybe that's where some
of
the confusion came from. On a side note, if you ever get a chance to
check
out Calvin's book "As Quiet As It's Kept," you should. It's a good read

When I was growing up in NJ, the Philly announcers called him finn ee
ous.

When I asked James Williams about the pronunciation, he gave an
explanation similar to what Jae said.

Anybody know how to reach his brother, Calvin, the guitarist? He would
certainly know.
