I'm late to chime in on this, but you're absolutely right, Bobby. Esperanza
is one of the finest young jazz bassists, or jazz musicians, period, that
I've heard in a long while.
The fact that she sings beautifully, and incorporates pop, R&B, funk, Latin
and Brazilian elements in her music only makes her more appealing.
Based on what I've heard of Esperanza's music, and what I've learned through
several interviews I've done with her (for Bass Player mag), I really don't
think she has any intentions of abandoning real jazz.

Esperanza plays a variety of styles of music and she considers herself a
jazz artist. So do a lot of other musicians i.e. Herbie Hancock, Chick
Corea, Dr. Donald Byrd, Joe Sample, Ron Carter, Branford Marsalis, etc.
who refuse to be put in a box.
I agree with you that the tune wasn't "Jazz" in the purist sense,
however it is her first major release and I'm sure down the road you
will find her pulling out the stops for all of you who are suspect about
her jazz acumen. I happened to see her perform here in Cleveland as
part of Donald Harrison's quintet and she absolutely floored the
audience including Dave Love of Heads Up Records who was in attendance
(and probably signed her because of what he heard.) By the way, she was
using a borrowed upright, played it like she owned it and maybe sang one
tune in two satisfying sets of music that happened that evening. I was
impressed not with her singing but with how she "handled" the bass that
evening. I was surprised that her first recording did not feature her
in any of the tunes just playing the bass. I do know this.....She's
just getting warm.... Stay tuned for more.

Thank you Mike...I didn't want to be the first to say it.
This young woman was lovely, sang beautifully and the music was nice,
but I
found that tune to be an amalgam of jazz, smooth, and pop R&B - meaning
marketable, mortgage paying music...and bravo for her if she makes a
chunk of
money from it. Let's just hope that she doesn't abandon jazz for all
time, for
the almighty dollar, because she is quite talented. And, because she is
so
beautiful, let us also hope she doesn't fall under the spell of some
Svengali
Costello who tries to make her a mainstream pop star and works her to
death so
that she ends up dissing the audience who loves her.
