My favorite burnin' classic cuts that everyone plays are "Battle Royal"
from "First Time: The Count Meets the Duke" that featured the combined
Duke Ellington and Basie Orchestras, also "E's Flat and Ah's Flat Too"
from Mingus' "Blues and Roots," and Eddie Lockjaw Davis from the album
"Afro Jaws" on Riverside, I think what I'm thinking of is Tin Tin Deo -
there's an amazing trumpet battle between Clark Terry and the other
trumpet player whose name escapes me (Ernie Royal maybe?). I also love
some of the numbers from Kenton's West Side Story, wherew the over-the top
brass and percussion really seem to pay off, the sound is so big and
bombastic I love to turn the monitprs all the way up in the studio and jam
out. I would also mention Blakey's versions of Caravan and Night in
Tunisia from the respective Blakey albums on Riverside and Blue Note.
Finally from the album "Meet the Jazztet" I love "Serenata" and "It's All
Right with Me" - Benny Golson's arrangements are beatutifully crafted, Art
Farmer is fl eet and lyrical at the same time and Curtis Fuller plays
amazing solos as well.
