Speaking of Mingus, how about Pithecanthrepus Erectus? I've also always liked James Carter's "Layin' In The Cut"...

The first ones that spring to mind are ones that snapped my head the 
first time I heard them... Art Blakey with Clifford Brown, Lou 
Donaldson, Horace Silver & Curley Russell playing "A Night In 
Tunisia" from "A Night at Birdland" (1954) on Blue Note, and Charles 
Mingus' "Haitian Fight Song" from The Clown (1957) on Atlantic.
