from A to Z, how do we educate a public about Jazz?? Jazz from A to B {Art
Ensemble of CHicago to George Benson} is enough of a challenge.? The
Coltrane catalog alone {from "Ballads" to "Om} is another example. by the
time we get to the end ther'e not just Zoot, but Zutty!
perhaps we need to fashion a national campaign that can be agreed upon by
a wide coalition within our industry and embraced and supported.?

All -
As jazz festival season is approaching, consider that, over the past decade or
so, most of them have turned away from booking jazz musicians and leaned more
toward booking pop performers. Jazz Aspen is less than 25 percent jazz, and
the Playboy Jazz Festival was at about 50/50 last year. Even the New Orleans
Jazz Festival is more of a pop fest.

If more truer jazz festivals (with the flavor of an IAJE) would surpass the pop
shows, and if the pop shows would drop the jazz moniker, then the confusion
might subside.

Additionally, more outreach on the part of the stations, public or commercial,
to the schools and the community in general is also a factor. Some stations,
though, see the community as a resource (in membership $$$) rather than the
other way around.
