Guilt always works for me! No, no....Mostly I think it's just all of us need
to have a handle on what we've been left to work with and know where to
guide our attentions so that we can keep the important pieces of the jazz
industry afloat. 

Emusic and the other streaming and download sites, used as a tool to
audition new music, are great. Musicians and labels certainly want radio and
press people to have free or cheap ways to get hold of the music, so I'm all
for them going there. The tech industry's peddling of the idea though that
this is a workable retail model for our future should be nipped in the bud
FAST. Am I naïve in thinking it can be slowed? You bet your butt, I define
naive!

I think knowing the good independent stores and guiding civilians toward
them is a great first step. That unsigned artists now have CDBaby is
momentous and it should be wildly supported, along with the independent
stores that handle distributed labels. There are some great Public
Radio/community record store relationships out there now and we as a label
notice the difference in those towns. This is of course a very quaint way of
looking at all this, but quaint is what we'll be if we don't look
realistically at this hand we're being dealt by an industry that isn't
really all that concerned with our long-term health.

I would say that the business model of downloading songs & albums is at its
basis a great means of music distribution, but the major problem today seems
to be that the major labels are still the controling figures at the
bargaining table.  Which as we know means they care more about their bottom
line than the income of their artist roster.  I guess I thought that eMusic
was a little better towards the artist because it deals with the independent
labels that are run by folks like you that do care about the well-being of
your artists.

So where does that leave us who still want to get new music ??  Should I now
feel guilty about downloading off of eMusic ??  The last 2 independent
record stores up here in Fort Collins are both going out of business which
only leaves Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, and Circuit City (and Wal-Mart, of
course, but I rarely go there).  

Any suggestions for a means of getting music that benefits the artists and
the labels ??  Is it going to come down to ordering directly from a label or
artist's website to ensure that everyone gets their fair share ??
