Thanks Ed - Yes, there's licensing for the CDs and then a separate license
for downloads. The download license has to be renewed and repaid every year.

Adding NOW! The much-anticipated 2nd releases of SF-based vocalist KAREN
BLIXT (''Mad Hope'') and 2-time ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award winner alto
saxophonist JALEEL SHAW (''Optimism'').
But don't just take my word for it! Here's what Jae Sinnett of WHRV had to
say about these self-produced CDs in a post about recent releases at the
JPL:
BLIXT - Fantastic arrangements ... visionary. Check her take on the blues
(sort of here) ''Billie's Bounce.''
SHAW - Underrated player. This CD has one of elements I look for most in
great jazz recordings ... compositional and improvisational balance. Check
his take on ''Love For Sale.'' Wild. Forward thinking writing ... right up
the proverbial alley.''
Jaleel's CD is already chartbound at JazzWeek. Currently a member of the
Roy Haynes Quartet and the Mingus Big Band, he's joined on ''Optimism'' by
Robert Glasper, Lage Lund and Jeremy Pelt. Karen's CD features Patrice
Rushen, Randy Brecker, Will Kennedy, Abraham Laboriel, Alex Acuna and Kenny
Washington.
Also going for more adds and airplay of two new CDs on the acclaimed
Venezuelan label Cacao Musica - ''La Patilla'' by guitarist AQUILES BAEZ
(featuring Anat Cohen ) and ''Father and Son'' by pianist JOSE NEGRONI's
TRIO. They have been charting at JazzWeek World for several weeks but we
could use some help over on the jazz side.

Thanks, John, I appreciate the information. If licensing fees have already
been paid for the CD, do they need to be paid again for a download site, as
perhaps an additional manifestation (if that's the correct word) of the
work?

Hi Ed,
No, there's no fee to have music added to the main download sites. The cost
that would have an immediate impact comes in licensing the non-original
music. Licensing fees are always paid on that music but it's usually offset
by the profit made on a CD sale. With downloads, the initial administrative
costs associated with licensing on top of the licensing fee makes it
necessary to make quite a few sales. Depending on the number of
non-original
tunes on a record, it can take several dozen downloads to several hundred
before you'd hit what could humbly be termed a "profit." Unfortunately,
many
jazz albums miss out on that glory day.
Thanks,
John
