Michelle was there and will give you her impressions of the vibe of that musical and spiritual event and of course lots of the music heard at the festival including Galactic, Papa Grows Funk, The New Orleans Nightcrawlers, Kirk Joseph and much more!

With all our specials this week celebrating the great English guitarist JOHN McLAUGHLIN, it’s only appropriate that we give you, as we do every Friday, our exclusive Beyond Jazz feature that focuses on the Fusion Era and celebrate the fusion contributions of one of the true Fusion masters. So beginning at 7 AM Eastern/4 AM Pacific until midnight Eastern/9 PM Pacific we’ll begin each hour with a classic fusion piece by Mr. McLaughlin. You’ll hear him solo as well as with Miles Davis, The Mahavishu Orchestra, Shakti, the Trio of Doom and more. So listen for the Fusion work of the great JOHN McLAUGHLIN on this week’s edition of IF IT’S FRIDAY, THIS MUST BE FUSION here on BEYOND JAZZ.
This weekend Beyond Jazz presents another edition of "THE MOJA REPORT with MARK RUFFIN!” Join award-winning presenter, producer and writer Mark Ruffin as he covers the many aspects of the world of modern jazz from his perspective. Listen twice each weekend for THE MOJA REPORT, Saturday mornings at 11 AM Eastern/8 AM Pacific, just before Words & Music begins, and Sunday nights at 9 PM Eastern/6 PM Pacific, part of the Sunday Specials. It’s "THE MOJA REPORT with MARK RUFFIN,” and on this week’s edition Mark gives us part one of his two-part salute to one of the greatest English jazzmen, keyboardist Brian Auger. Part One will focus on his great work in the fusion era featuring Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express.
On Saturday, May 10th, Beyond Jazz presents another edition of “WORDS & MUSIC,” a special presentation we call “JOHN McLAUGHLIN & COMPANY.” Back in 1984, Scott Thompson, of Jazz @ Lincoln Center in New York, had a backstage conversation with the legendary English guitarist and they talked about everything from how John met Miles Davis and began to work with him, to the very essence of what creativity is all about. We’ll give you some of that very deep conversation as well as the comments of others who knew and worked with McLaughlin like Bill Evans and Stanley Clarke. It all starts at Noon and lasts through Midnight Eastern time (9 AM-9 PM Pacific) as we begin each hour with conversation followed some of McLaughlin’s great music. It’s “JOHN McLAUGHLIN & COMPANY,” on this week’s edition of “WORDS & MUSIC.”
Every Sunday it’s the EMAIL REPLY HOUR…from 6-7 PM Eastern/3-4 PM Pacific, Russ Davis spends an hour responding to email messages by playing requested songs, answering listener questions and reading listener comments that have been emailed to him at beyondjazz at xmradio.com.
PREMIER SUNDAY on Beyond Jazz…XM 72
This Sunday, May 11th, will be another PREMIER SUNDAY here on Beyond Jazz as we spring five great new releases on you. We’ll begin with the new release “INTO THE BLUE” by New Orleans born trumpeter NICHOLAS PAYTON. Once again, Nicholas expands the boundaries of his music by incorporating everything he’s learned over the years, including swing and groove, acoustic and electric. Then you’ll hear an incredible trio led by keyboard wizard ROBERT WALTER, who went to the source, New Orleans, to enlist two of the greats of the town. They are Astral Project’s great drummer, bass combo, JOHNNY VIDACOVICH and JAMES SINGLETON, and the three of them tear it up on Robert’s new CD “CURE ALL.” Robert plays his signature organ on this session, as well as piano, Fender Rhodes and Clavinet for a varied and funky gumbo of groove. We’ll go international with a beautiful, talented vocalist originally from Belgrade, ALMA MICIC, with a very personal, spiritual and jazzy release titled “THE HOURS.” Plus, you’ll hear another great trio, this one from France, called TRIO SUD, led by guitarist SYLVAIN LUC, with a new release that is named from one of Joe Zawinul’s famous compositions. It’s called “YOUNG AND FINE.” Then we’ll top it off with the work of the MICHAEL PEDICIN QUINTET, led by the Philadelphia saxophonist, featuring great playing and beautiful songs on the new CD “EVERYTHING STARTS NOW.” So listen for these new releases beginning at 5 PM Eastern time, that’s 2 PM Pacific, this Sunday, May 11th, another PREMIER SUNDAY here on Beyond Jazz.
