Jazz Journey Traverses Midwest
Friday - May 02, 2008 05:00 AM CT
Starting this spring, Motel 6 offers travelers a fun, affordable way to
explore the origins of jazz. In partnership with internationally-renowned
jazz percussionist and composer Kahil El¹Zabar, Motel 6 is launching the
³Motel 6 Jazz Journey² as part of its newly-launched Web site, called
Goin6.com, that can help travelers experience America by road.
²Jazz Journey² is specifically designed to assist travelers in tracing the
roots of jazz music from Chicago to New Orleans. The journey kicked off in
April in conjunction with Jazz Appreciation Month.
³From the 1920s to the 1970s, artists such as Dizzie Gillespie, Gene Ammons,
Donnie Hathaway, Eddie Harris and others traveled the New Orleans/Chicago
route as they left their imprints on this unique style of music,² said Kahil
El¹Zabar. ³They paid their dues and perfected their craft while performing
at jazz clubs and other venues along the way. Motel 6 is doing a great thing
by focusing attention on this uniquely American form of music. It is part of
who we are.²
The route, which forms a rough loop between New Orleans and Chicago, is
truly one of the most historically vibrant threads of American music
history. The Goin6.com site will also feature video and audio clips from
Kahil El¹Zabar about each interesting stop with lists of jazz venues for
each city on the circuit.
The journey includes highlights such as Memphis¹s famous Beale Street, the
³melting pot² of delta blues, jazz, rock-n-roll, R&B and Gospel;
Preservation Hall in New Orleans and French Quarter locations noted for jazz
performances; and Clarksdale, Miss., a historically significant site where
Robert Johnson ³sold his soul to the devil.²
Motel 6 has selected Indianapolis and Louisville, Ky., because of their
unique jazz history and the availability of clean, affordable Motel 6
locations travelers can utilize along their journey. Both cities have
produced a number of greats and are still home to venues for great
contemporary jazz.
Travelers can customize their journey on the Goin6.com Web site by choosing
their own route, picking the sites of most interest to them and developing
their own time frame for the journey.
In May, road trippers, musicians, students, educators and other travelers
can begin participating in the Goin¹6 community by posting messages and
videos of their experiences. In the future, the Goin6.com site will feature
new Motel 6 journeys, with opportunities for travelers to explore and share
their experiences.
