I'm a week late posting this playlist, as I just wrapped up grading for the
Spring '08 semester, henceforth and ever after to be known as the Semester
>From Heck. There is no "GE" show this week, as I'm resting up before
starting summer school on Tuesday - only 6 students instead of the Semester
>From Heck's 200+!
On last Friday's show, there was a two-way tie for most response, between
Sagapool's mix of gypsy jazz, Balkan, klezmer, and a host of etceteras, and
Jimmy Blythe's 1920's piano roll stylings, on the borderline between blues,
ragtime, and early jazz. Blythe attracted more callers, but Sagapool was the
clear favorite among parental visitors who were touring the station to see
where their graduating senior offspring had been spending their time. Other
tracks attracting positive response were Canadian singer-songwriter Dan
McKinnon, bluesman Steve Johnson, Latin-jazz violinist Pedro Alfonso, Roy
Cumming's piano-jazz trio (with Dave Leonhardt, who has been a favorite
around here since playing the Fredonia Opera House a few seasons back), the
Bo-Keys' instrumental r&b in the style of the Mar-Keys, the Arabic-style
Ensemble Al-Asdeka, Arturo O'Farrill's ear-bending version of the Juan
Tizol classic "Caravan", and veteran Irish traditionalists Patrick Street.
