It all sounds the same. Same tempos...feel...level of improvisation...which
is minimal...mix...mood...etc. The new material sounds like the old. What is
needed for them in my view is to have more "variation."

That's because "smooth" jazz, like many AC formats, play radio edits. These
edits, usually done at the station) get to the hook in thirty seconds, don't
encourage improvisation ("no noodling") or any other technique (scat, ethnic
instrumentation) that upset the "smooth" feel of the music. The artists
usually go along with the edits as a means of promoting the release or an upcoming
gig. Should you happen to attend a gig or pick up a CD (not the radio
single), you'd be able to hear the sounds of some solid contemporary jazz artists,
unedited, and much appreciated by loyal fans.

Staying tuned,
Reebs
