This is indeed sad news. When I was just out of college in the 1970s I
discovered one of Reitz's recordings and wrote to her. As we lived near each
other she invited me over to her apartment and we had a memorable afternoon
discussing music. I also remember thinking she wanted to set me up with her
daughter. At the time I had recently met the songwriter and blues singer Doc
Pomus and I told him about her. He sounded like he was going to contact her
but I don't know if he ever did, but it was funny for me because one of the
questions he asked me was if she was good looking. It seemed to be a
strange question after I had just finished telling him how she was standing
up for the women who never had a chance to record. I mumbled my way through
a response I cannot remember -- I may have just said "sure". In any case
it's a great memory.
