Pretty fair amount of listener response today, particularly for the jazz
artists featured on the show, including saxophonist Idit Shner (most calls
of the day) with a jazz interpretation of a traditional Jewish tune that
owes virtually nothing to klezmer; also, vibist Joe Locke, plus the inspired
pairing of veterans James Moody and Hank Jones. Other genres fared well with
listeners as well - including the Malaysian-based techno artist DjayPee,
hardcore bluegrass band Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Italian world-music
band Municipale Balcanica, autoharpist Adam Miller doing an old ragtime
song, and classical guitarist Phil Mathieu.

On a side note, while discussing the late Miriam Makeba with one of my World
Music classes at SUNY Fredonia, I happened to mention that 40 years ago,
there were entire radio stations that played genre-free radio programming
all the time, and that my show tries to keep that spirit of free-form,
"underground" radio alive. (Perhaps that's why my audience, which does
include a lot of college students, generally skews older than other shows on
WCVF? A lot of older listeners tell me they dislike block programming and
prefer free-form.) The students simply could not imagine that there was ever
a time when a radio station would play sets consisting of Jimi Hendrix,
Charles Lloyd, Miriam Makeba, Tim Hardin, Ravi Shankar, and Howlin' Wolf,
one right after the other. Ah, the golden days of my youth . . . To the
