Here's another one: "3 Bones and a Quill," Fresh Sound FSR-CD105. It was originally issued as Roost LP 2229, and features Cleve along with Jim Dahl and Frank Rehak on trombones, Gene Quill on alto sax, Hank Jones alternating with Nat Pierce on piano, Whitey Mitchell on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums.

GOING FOR ADDS NOW:
Resonance Records has re-serviced MIKE GARSON's CONVERSATIONS WITH MY FAMILY [ ****1/2 Downbeat '' A glowing achievement''] stickered with some fine jazz tracks. This is our first official solicitation for adds (due to Reference Recordings having a title out in the spring which we did not want to create any conflict with). GARSON is a piano and keyboard wizard, who has worked with Stan Getz, Stanley Clarke, his band Freeflight and many others. There are some gorgeous tracks ready for airplay. As a bonus, the DVD features Peter Erskine and the sadly, late great LA bass player, Dave Carpenter + a preview of Resonance artist Lori Bell on flute.
Resonance has just released Pittsburgh native CATHY ROCCO's debut YOU'RE GONNA HEAR FROM ME. Check out her take on ''Autumn Leaves'', ''Come Rain or Shine'' and ''Give Me One Reason'' (with a guest turn on organ from John Beasley). ROCCO is not some newbie-want-to-be a-jazz-singer. ''She is a formidable swinger'' Will Friedwald, New York Sun, from the liner notes, which are worth a read. Cathy is supported by Tamir Hendelman on piano, Dave Carpenter on bass and Vic Stevens on drums. CATHY ROCCO has a big voice and a keen sense of drama.

A few more favorite Jimmy Cleveland solos:
If You Could See Me Now (from Gil Evans & 10)
Las Vegas Tango (The Individualism of Gil Evans)
The Kerry Dancer (Gigi Gryce: Nica's Tempo)
NR #2 (Lucky Thompson: Tricotism)
I also like the 1955 recordings that Doug referred to, reissued as "Introducing Jimmy Cleveland"

Subject: [JPL] Hard heated Hanna(h) returns to Savannah??
Just as we breathe a sigh of releif for the folks on the Gulf Coast,
Savannah is keeping an eye on Hanna who appears to be headed back to
Savannah; scheduled to arrive a couple weeks before the Savannah Jazz
Festival gets underway (September 20 - 28th). Hopefully she'll stay
comfortably off-shore and Savannah's traditional beautiful weather will hold
sway. Check out the Savannah Jazz Festival schedule at
www.savannahjazzfestival.org. and send your prayers this way.
Hard Hearted Hannah
In old Savannah
I said Savannah
The weather there is nice and warm
The climate's of a Southern brand
But here's what I don't understand
They got a gal there
A pretty gal there
Who's colder than an arctic storm
Got a heart just like a stone
Even ice men leave her alone.
They call her
Hard-hearted Hannah
The Vamp of Savannah
The meanest gal in town
Leather is tough, but Hannah's heart is tougher
She's a gal who loves to see men suffer
To tease them and thrill them
To torture and kill them
Is her delight, they say
I saw her at the seashore with a great big pan
There was Hannah, pouring water on a drowning man
She's hard-hearted Hannah

Subject: [JPL] POSTPONED - Chris Calloway Memorial
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: *Rob Wheeler* >
We originally planned to hold a memorial service and reception to
celebrate the life of Chris Calloway on Sunday, September 7, 2008. With
scheduling issues around the Santa Fe Fiesta, it seems best to postpone
the memorial until a future date.
There will be information posted on www.chriscalloway.com
as details for the memorial celebration
come together. In the mean time, you can email calloway at newmexico.com
with any stories, photos or other
memories that you share with Chris, and we will compile them to share
when we celebrate Chris Calloway's many decades of love and stardom.
Sending an email to calloway at newmexico.com
automatically includes you on a list to
be notified as details for the memorial are confirmed.
Thank you!
