> One of the more pleasant surprises at this years Ella Fest was vocalist Freda Payne. Her tribute to Ella was fantastic. I didn't know her first recording was on Impulse back in the early 60's. This release has since been re-issued so I have to get my hands on it. She's known for her hit "Band Of Gold" but she is no doubt a great jazz singer. Check out her web site at www.fredapayne.com and there is a clip of her performing the Ella tribute...even looking like Ella in the clip. Her pop success has kept her out of the jazz realm but my guess is that we'll see a jazz recording from her at some point. Along the lines of what Gladys Knight did. Freda is the real deal.
