[JPL] Airplay Ethics Question

Regarding the on-air 'promotion' of CDs/concerts and the like...
At our Community station (and as a recipient of CPB funds) we are
admonished regularly that we are prohibited from "Calls To Action"
on-air. We can give web addresses, even say "...for more info on this
event"...or "for ticket info"...or "I heard this band last night and
they were fantastic".
What we CAN'T do is to say things like.."these guys were
fantastic AND you gotta hear them"; or "Don't miss this opportunity to
see this band"; In other words, we can't be seen as encouraging the
listener to do something. It's a subtle difference, to be sure, and
the wording used is very important. We just are schooled in restraint
so as not to appear to be urging the listener to take a certain
action.
As concerns the playing of CDs in which you had a
part....ESPECIALLY in an educational institution, it seems to me (I'm
not a lawyer NOR do I play one on TV) that exposing the public to the
accomplishments of your student musicians is well within bounds. Where
I would draw the line is in the 'call to action' that listeners should
" run right out and purchase the CD."
The 'bright line' is dimmed I think when it's your own music (sold
for a profit) you are playing. Again, I think that if you play your
music, but don't verbally recommend some action, you should be OK.
(Featuring one's own band for an hour-long show would seem to be
achin' for a fight) Gene Abkarian KRFC Community Radio
