Whenever I think that I'd be happier as a hedge fund manager, a letter such as this comes along and reminds me that there's something priceless about this occupation.
Please read this in the spirit of a dedication to all of us who have the privilege of playing jazz records for the people.

Dear WFCR: Just thought WFCR would like to know a little story about Roy
Eldridge, featured on tonight's Jazz a la Mode with Tom Reney. In May 1978, I
had the opportunity to meet with, and listen to, Roy Eldridge in person. He
performed at my brother and sister-in law's outdoor wedding in Westerly, Rhode
Island, at the request of the bride's brother. Roy's appearance was a wedding
gift from the bride's brother, who at the time was a bartender and mixologist
at the Rainbow Room in NYC. Roy was a charm! This was a small, Italian/Polish
family wedding, and Roy was a special addition to the festivities. I remember
his adorable smile and personal charm, particularly with babies at the wedding;
and of course, his amazing music! His music was so engaging that my elderly
Polish grandmother danced on a makeshift dance floor with glee! (My
grandmother, "Bapki," immigrated from Poland in 1914 at the age of 16... I
think her dancing to Roy's music may have been one of the highlights of her
life!) As I cook in my kitchen, it's been especially nice to hear your
station honor Roy this day. He warmly contributed to our family time back in
1978, as well as to scores of listeners worldwide.
