I first heard Fred's name when I interviewed Art Farmer in 1979. He spoke
so highly of Hersch that I've followed him ever since, but haven't seen him
in person in a long time.
He's put up a courageous fight, to say the least.
I see he's got Ralph Alessi on his band. I saw Ralph a couple of weeks ago
with Jamie Baum's Septet at Joe's Pub. Alessi and pianist George Colligan
were standouts playing Jamie's charts.

Fred is amazing indeed Tom. Thanks for posting this. I've had the
opportunity to work with him a few times and the conversations we've had
about the music and the illness he's been confronted with were enlightening.
His resilience is amazing. I think he's been dealing with HIV/AIDS since the
80's. Remarkable in itself and somewhat of a medical wonder. We had dinner
once and afterward he dropped I know at least 12 different pills. To have to
deal with that all this time and make the music he has is astonishing.
