The Frigid Fingers Were Live, But The Music Wasn’t
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/23/arts/music/23band.html?_r=1&hp
An article in The NY Times reveals that due to the frigid weather the
performance of John Williams' piece "Air & Simple Gifts" composed for
and heard at Obama's inauguration was a version recorded 2 days
earlier that the musicians (Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Gabriela Montero
& Anthony McGill) played along with at the ceremony. Perlman and Ma
brought modern instruments on stage instead of one of the former's
Stradivarius or Guarneri violins and the latter's Montagna or
Stradivarius cellos.
