STILL
ANOTHER JAZZ SHOW 8June'09
THOMAS
MARRIOTT “Take It To The Ozone” “Masqualero” FLEXICON
Origin Records
“”Take
It To The Ozone” is Woody Shaw in drive and energy, with Joe
Locke's vibraphone and some 'Hutcherson' licks.
Then “Mesquelero” has Bill Anschell on Rhodes,
peering over the horizon with Mark Taylor on saxophone, searching for
treasure of the Sierra Madre in myriad lucidity.
IRIS
ORNIG “The Very Same
Sensation” “Caravan” NEW GROUND
GEMA
Yoshiro Okazaki's trumpet is centering and Dan
Grissett's playing is profound and a knockout on “Caravan.”
Fifties juke box loved Ahmad Jamal for the version. Or was it
“Poincianna.”Or maybe the “Caravan” mood, created with exotic
percussion and Danny Grissett's premier pianistic approach.
Bassist Iris Ornig's hypnotic harmonies are so like
bassist Eric Von Essen's compositions. Especially in a folk ethnic
way.
Iris Ornig, a bassist from Germany, composing and
playing in New York City with a profound harmonic balance, with a
similar conception to Eric Von Essen, a bassist, born of Swedish and
East Indian parents, who wrote and performed in Los Angeles for the
many great West Coast jazz musicians.
The Ornig/ Von Essen connection is very clear to my
ears.
Nels Cline's solo on “Blues For Me” is exceptional,
in “Blues For Me.”
Let's wait, do nothing and it'll all pass. That's what
jazz is.
The process of acceptance.
That's why we include Von Essen's “Valse Agite',.”
from THE MUSIC OF ERIC von ESSEN, VOLUME III on
Cryptogranophone Records.
Iris Ornig and Eric von Essen have a similar uncanny
melodic and harmonic sensibility.
Finally:
played the new remastering ofFRANK SINATRA'S LIVE AT THEMEADOWLANDSconcert
in March 1986 is a special CD. It probably his last live gig on
record.
Frank didn't release live concerts on his record label.
Was it the spontineity? Frank Sinatra was a perfectionist, knew
exactly what he wanted, and would argue with his arrangers,
especially during the Capital Records music recordings of the mid
fifties that resurrected his career.
Give the man credit for standing up for what he
believed. That and the movie role as Pvt Angelo Maggio for which he
won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in “From Here To Eternity.”
Sinatra was now in control of his destiny and that's
probably why this live recording hasn't been released until now.
This live show in his hometown is almost like a welcome
home party.
Any “misadventures” are beloved. There are few and
slight, not important enough to mention now, for the music stands out
for it's incredible spontaneity, proving once again for all who
remember, that Frank Sinatra was The Chairman Of The Board.
PS: I got a kick out of the fact that Frank would answer
his own phone at his home in Palm Desert.
And if you one of the fortunate few that had his
unlisted number...
Frank Sinatra was a regular guy from Hoboken, who so
happened to be the Greatest Saloon Singer Of All Time.
