Hi Group --
Like Arturo I too went to sleep with a transistor radio under my
pillow (ran through a lot of batteries too!) listening to The Good
Guys on WMCA in the morning and Frankie Crocker at night.
One of my most indelible memories -- and what I cite as the earliest
influence on the development of my attraction to Black American music
-- was hearing Fontella Bass sing "Rescue Me" in 1965.
14 years later I would produce in Athens, GA the first Art Ensemble of
Chicago concert in the Deep South (i.e. between DC and Texas) and meet
trumpeter Lester Bowie who played on and arranged that hit single --
he was then Fontella's husband.
In 2001 I was attending a jazz festival in Fano on Italy's Adriatic
coast where Fontella was performing. I was speaking to her back stage
right before she was to perform and started to tell her about how
important hearing her music as a child was to me. She looked at me,
smiled and said "Honey, I've got to go on now but if it's taken us 35
years to meet you can certainly hold onto that story for another 90
minutes."
Priceless!
Mitchell
