March 2, 1959 is special day.
Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul; Chambers and Jimmy Cobb recorded the first of the classic "Kind Of Blue," considered the most popular album in jazz history at 2:30 in the afternoon at the Columbia 30th street studio.
We imagine that "So What" was the first, recorded between 2:30 and 5:30 pm, then they broke for dinner and Miles called in Wynton Kelly for "Freddie Freeloader" in the 7 to 10 pm session.
No doubt it was an ordinary session, setting up, sound checks, then a couple of takes to get it right.
It could have been a gray cool day in New York City, or it could have been sunny and unseasonably warm. Whatever it was, it was probably ordinary for the musicians. But like many times in modern jazz, some magic happened that day.
For it turned out to be one of the most profound recording sessions of all time.
And yet it seems ordinary, business as usual, listening to "Blue in Green."
We all know this was something more than ordinary.

At 10:30 am, Pacific Coast Time, we played "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader." It was 1:30 pm, Eastern standard time.
Blooms day is celebrated every June 16, by James Joyce "Ulysses" fans.
March 2nd, every year then is noted to jazz fans everywhere as" Kind Of Blue" day
